Three young girls are now orphans after police say their father killed their mother in their Freehold home, and then himself, in what police are calling a murder-suicide.
The incident happened Monday morning
The three daughters attended different schools within the district, and there will be crisis counselors on hand at each school today.
According to officials, Denise Bartone was found dead inside the family home located at 123 Koster Drive.
A few hours later, police confirmed they found the body of her husband, Kenneth Bartone, in the Rartian River.
His death was ruled a suicide.
Freehold Township Mayor Barbara McMorrow was friends with Denise.
“We always say we are a family town, you see that on our signs,” says McMorrow. As a family we will all come together and support her children and do whatever needs to be done to get the family through this awful period of time. “
The mayor says she got to know Denise through her work with the Township Education Foundation.
She says the community is now turning its attention to the couple’s three daughters, who were home when their mother was killed.
Officials say that the investigation remains open. Anyone who may have any details is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Andrea Tozzi at 1-800-733-7443 or Freehold Township Police Detective James Burdge at 732-462-7908.
